The widely beloved poem you’re referring to is titled “Dust If You Must” and is by Rose Milligan.
It first appeared in The Lady magazine in 1998 and has since gained immense popularity, often shared on social media, read at events, and even printed on various items. Its enduring appeal lies in its simple yet profound message about prioritizing life’s more meaningful aspects over endless chores and superficial perfection.
Here is the poem:
Dust If You Must

Dust if you must, but wouldn’t it be better
To paint a picture, or write a letter,
Bake a cake, or plant a seed;
Ponder the difference between want and need?
Dust if you must, but there’s not much time,
With rivers to swim, and mountains to climb;
Music to hear, and books to read;
Friends to cherish, and life to lead.
Dust if you must, but the world’s out there
With the sun in your eyes, and the wind in your hair;
A flutter of snow, a shower of rain,
This day will not come around again.
Dust if you must, but bear in mind,
Old age will come and it’s not kind.
And when you go (and go you must)

This poem was read at my mother’s funeral as it encompasses her spirit so much, essentially get on with life and live each day like it’s your last.

Market day is tomorrow!! Crazy how quick that came round! I cannot wait to meet some of you lovely lot. This post is of my trip back home I seriously needed a break. It was my partners first time in Yorkshire so I showed him some of the hidden gems I grew up enjoying. It felt very grounding and aligned. Yesterday chaos in prep for the Boaters big bash Saturday! We cruised central! Such a different vibe it feels so so busy! I can no longer walk to my wild swimming spot like I used to but there’s plenty bike routes and classes and climbing walls around. Change, we often forget life is ever changing. No two days are the same infact. That’s just the beauty of life. Production has been back in full after the cleaning post cruise

Life is too short to fall for people who don’t love you loudly, or for relationships that don’t set fire to your soul. Our time on this earth is impermanent and in those years we must love fearlessly. The person you’re meant to be with will challenge you, will push you, and drive you crazy. Make you happy and confused and show you what real, complicated love is, all at the same time.

The person you’re meant to be with will terrify you because they make you feel something greater than anything and anyone else. So this is what you need to know about love you must always chase the person who scares you. Don’t settle for comfort. Love wildly.

For context me and a good friend I met working at a hostel in Morocco were travelling Spain by motorcycle and camping most nights in our hammocks, usually with the most amazing backdrops. This was one of my favourite views.

Have you ever witnessed a sunrise like this?

The rugged beauty of the Dolomites at sunrise. What a profoundly moving moment! My time in the Dolomites felt surreal, like a movie. I hitchhiked there and spent the first couple of days in awe, either swaying in my hammock or perched on a ridge where mountains stretched endlessly before me, unlike any I’d ever seen. I watched nature’s masterpiece unfold. Before long, I discovered a beautiful mountain spring flanked by towering pines. I bathed in the icy stream and slept peacefully among the whispering trees.

These moments, these raw and untamed landscapes, are the very essence of my jewellery designs. The jagged peaks, the smooth, worn stones of the riverbed, the delicate textures of pine needles – they all whisper stories that I translate into wearable art. Just as the Dolomites are a testament to nature’s enduring beauty, my sustainable silver pieces are crafted to last, reflecting that same timeless spirit. Each piece captures a fragment of that mountain magic, a reminder of the power and serenity of the natural world. Which element of this scene inspires you most? I was hammering this ring to make a flat edge to stamp in initials on for Valentine’s Day. and I came to the stage and just stopped to admire the beautiful texture of the silver and the way it has spread with applied pressure and it reminded me of how much I love working with silver so I think I’m gonna keep this one a love letter to the trade, craft if you will for this one doesn’t feel like just making money never feels like that it feels like a creation each and every time every single piece each one of a kind.

Having its own character and story since we had a journey during its making together and the moment in art. I love getting to know the silver feeling it soft points and how it naturally goes. I know how best to shape it and polish. I’m learning how exactly the solder is gonna flow when it does where to heat the points to an attract solder to it. I look forward to learning more about it. I hope you come along with me for the journey.

My narrowboat is my studio, my home, and my sanctuary. It represents freedom – the freedom to create, to explore, and to live in harmony with nature.
